What is HMI?
HMI stands for "Human Machine Interface".
A Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is a user interface that connects a person to a machine, system, or device. This term broadly defines any device that enables a user to interact with an industrial device.
HMI involves three main human interaction functions:
- Touch (control by buttons, touch screens, keyboards, numeric keypads)
- Sight (monitoring and control on screen, supervision by light towers)
- Hearing (audible alarms, beeps)
Industrial HMI devices enable monitoring and/or control of the equipment they are connected to through a (programmable or non-programmable) controller. Their functions include:
- Settings
- Control and Command
- Monitoring and Supervision
- Historical Data Storage
- Smart Gateway
Did you know? The first HMI is the button!
Pro-face is the inventor of the first programmable graphic HMI. Pro-face HMIs natively connect to almost all other industry brands and is renowned as a manufacturer of robust and reliable products since the 1980s.
Why do we need HMI?
Optimized IoT solutions
In addition to controlling individual machines, production lines, or an entire network of equipment, IIoT-enabled HMIs can also collect data and display it on screen for operators, share crucial production information with plant personnel via dashboards and reports, and send alerts via text or email.
Collected information can be used to notify maintenance crews of potential issues before a breakdown occurs, preventing downtime and maximizing uptime. Real-time insight into equipment health may also be used to create predictive maintenance schedules, eliminating costly reactive maintenance and boosting throughput. Users can also quickly and efficiently identify and troubleshoot equipment, utility, or resource issues and react accordingly so that productivity is not disrupted.
HMI Centric Solution
We can let workers make full use of information not only by using HMI as an operating terminal but also by taking advantage of its connectivity and placing it between OT and IT as a gateway to higher level systems.
