Overview

LoRaWAN is a Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) protocol for long-range, low-power wireless communication, designed for Internet of Things (IoT) devices like sensors. It enables devices to communicate with gateways and a central network server over large distances, making it suitable for applications that need low power consumption and long battery life, such as smart farming, waste management, and smart metering.

Differences Between LoRaWAN and IoT

Features BeanAir LoRaWAN Sensor BeanAir IoT Sensor (2.4GHz)
Communication Protocol LoRaWAN® 2.4GHz Wireless
Range Coverage Very long range (km range) Shorter to medium range (within building/plant/industrial floor)
Power Consumption Very low power (battery friendly for long deployment) Higher power consumption compared to LoRaWAN
Best Applications Outdoor remote monitoring, structural health monitoring, large area asset monitoring Indoor factory, machinery condition monitoring, high data rate requirement
Data Rate / Transmission Frequency Lower data rate (LPWAN constraint) Higher data rate possible (useful for vibration / frequent measurement)
Network Requirement Needs LoRaWAN gateway / LoRa network setup Uses normal industrial wireless or WiFi (easier setup)
Typical Sensor Types LoRaWAN Inclinometer / Tilt sensors Vibration sensors, temperature/humidity, other wireless IoT types
Battery Life Longer battery life due to LPWAN optimization Usually shorter battery life compared to LoRaWAN
Deployment Difficulty Slightly more complex due to LoRaWAN network planning Simpler deployment, plug & connect in factory network
